HIRE NEWS: North American Rental Market

American Tool Rental Market Looks To Grow Further:

As well as it's large size, the American Tool Rental Market is also diverse in the market sector it occupies. In both Canada and North America the tool hire business growth has been steady. It was announced that the US tool hire industry generated an estimated US $3.3 billion in the year 2006.

Although it's growth has been steady, there is still a lot of potential for it to become even larger.
Compared to Europe the tool rental industry in America is still relatively young. The industry established itself in the years following the second world war when tools were scarce and military equipment became available in the marketplace.

The tool hire industry in North America has three main areas:

The largest area for revenue return is industrial equipment and construction tools. Followed by general DIY hire, and last event hire and party equipment rental.

The event hire segment represents the smallest market share with the revenue generated at a figure of around 5%. The segment does however show considerable growth rates and potential.

The construction equipment hired is almost exclusively rented by America's building and construction companies, with equipment rented such as access equipment, concrete mixers, concrete breakers etc. Industrial equipment includes tools in the lifting gear categories; genie super lifts, chain blocks, hoists and lifting gantries, welding equipment and grinders.

The general DIY hire market includes a wide range of equipment used by homeowners for light construction and home improvement, as well as landscaping, products including; ladders, floor sanding equipment, power tools.

Party and event hire includes products and services to consumers and corporate business for life events and celebrations such as weddings, graduations, parties, retirement celebrations, promotional and special events.

One lesson to be learnt for all UK hire companies is the trends which the US market is built on. For all three segments in the hire industry in the US the trends are all focussed heavily on customer satisfaction.

History Of Dewalt Power Tools

The History Of Dewalt:

Dewalt have manufactured power tools for ver 85 years and have obtained in this time a worldwide reputation for designing and manufacturing heavy duty tools and equipment.

The company started in 1922 when a gentleman by the name of Mr Raymond DEWALT invested the wordworking radial arm saw which for many decades went on to set the standard in quality and durability in heavy duty machinery. This was the start of the power tool brand and the begining of the reputation being earnt amongst professional tradesmen and woodworkers.

The dewalt range of equipment quickly became known for their durability, reliability and having powerful motors. These attributes soon became the trademark of this now well known and popular power tool brand.

Over the recent years these same attributes have been incorporated into modern high performance tools, both electric and cordless, stationary and portable. The company has also marketed a range of affordable and practical accessories and safety clothing. The wide range of tools and products in the range have been accepted by professional tradesmen and DIY'ers around the world and has resulted in Dewalt being the number one selling brand in power tools today. It has also been the fastest growing power tool brand in the world over the last five years.

All power tools supplied in the Uk are of either 110v, 240 volt, or are cordless tools from 3.6v to 36 volt in size. Common features of all dewalt cordless drills are that they are compact, powerful, drill fast, are relatively light in weight, are stronger than many other brands, and are available with a comprehensive tool warranty.

The range of Dewalt Power Tools is sold in Nottinghamshire through specialist tool and equipment outlet: MF Hire - Address: Unit 2, Colwick Road, Nottingham, NG2 4BG.

INSTALLATION OF UPVC WINDOWS

INSTALLATION OF UPV-C WINDOWS AND DOORS:

Equipment Required:

As with any home improvement product, the correct equipment must be obtained to ensure the task goes smoothly and the installation as planned. An appropriate tool kit for fitting PVC-U windows is required. If the equipment needed is not owned or available from a colleague or friend the appropriate tools can be hired here.

Planning:

UPVC windows and doors can be installed into either prepared openings in new buildings or into the existing openings in the walls after removal of the old doors and windows to be replaced. No sub-frames for the new windows are needed. The manufacturers instructions and specification sheets for each window system should be used to ensure that the correct size and style of window / door is purchased. UPVC windows and doors are finished as a complete product and the opening should be finished to the correct size before the new installation takes place. The window's opening should include a lintel if required, and tolerances should be allowed to enable the window to be installed. UPVC windows should not be installed until the aperture is totally complete and should not be used as a template for any building or alteratiopn work necessary.

Window Manufacture:

PVC-U windows are delivered ready to fit, and covered in a protective plastic film to prevent marking and scratching.

Transportation Of The Windows:

Glazed or unglazed window and door frames should be transported in an upright position on clean resilient packing. This will minimise transport damage and prevent twisting of the frames. For long distance transport cardboard wrapping or packers are recommended.

Storage Prior To Fitting:
All materials used in the manufacture of quality UPVC windows have a high resistance to weather corrosion and also common materials found on a building site.
Cement, plaster, and sand will not normally affect the UPVC but may scratch the surface of the frames if contact is made during handling. The windows drainage channels and glazing bead openings should be kept clean to prevent blockages and fitting difficulties. Any sand or abrasive materials should also be kept away from moving parts such as hinges and locks to avoid wear and surface marking
Removal of Existing Windows:

Check Points:

Check the external and internal structure for any damage and repair any damage found before commencing installation.

Check that the new windows have not been damaged in transit and that they have been manufactured in accordance with the original order - special attention should be given to the sizing.

Remove any items of furniture away from the window or door opening to avoid possible damage whilst removing the existing windows or installing the new windows.

Cover all carpets and soft furnishings with protective sheets so as to minimise the possibility of damage and to facilitate the `cleaning up operation'.

Using a stanley knife or similar tool, score around the perimeter of the existing door / window frame on the inside, where the plaster meets the frame edge. In most cases this will minimise the damage to the surrounding plasterwork.

Remove all opening window sashes and glass from the main windows frame.

Saw through any frame mullions or transoms and remove them from the window frame.
Cut through the vertical supports of the main frame - this should be done as far as possible without causing damage to the internal reveals or structure.
Protecting the plaster around the frame with a bearing point (a thin piece of pywood is ideal), use a levering bar or wrecking bar between the structure and the main vertical frame of the window to carefully lever the verticals inwards and then complete the cut. Remove the vertical members completely from the opening.

Next, remove the horizontal frame members of the outer frame from the opening.
Clean up the opening and remove any mastic or silicone sealant from the structure.
Remove all debris, nails, fixings from the work area.

Installation:

Frame Preparation

If installation of the new windows or doors is to be by screwing through the main outer frame into the opening, then the glass in the appropriate fixed light must be removed and placed aside. If a door sill or window sill is required then it must now be attached in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. If the sill is to be fixed to the window frame with screws, always screw from the underside into the new frame. It is important that fixing systems do not penetrate drainage channels, otherwise internal leaks will develop.

Next, Offer the new window into the opening, bedding in the manner recommended by the systems supplier(usually using plastic window packers), temporarily holding or clamping it into position to make sure it is level and plum.

Fix the window into the aperture using either fixing brackets or by drilling and fixing into the outer frame, screw holes should be no less than 150mm from the corners and at no more than 600mm centres. Modern fixings are available in several types including rawl fixings, fiscer fixings, and hammer type window fixers. If it is necessary to screw through the bottom member of the outer frame, where water could collect, then adequate sealing by the use of a modern silicone sealant should be applied.

Installation Of The Glass:

Fit the glazing units making sure that they are sitting on the necessary packers / glazing blocks to allow for adequate drainage of water. Refit the glazing beads, according to the manufacturer's instructions and taking care not to damage or scratch the glass.

Next, Check the window units for correct operation before proceeding with the final sealing and making good around the windows or new doors opening.

Making Good:

There should be approximately a 4 to 6mm gap between the outer frame and the building opening. Insert into this gap a flexible silicone sealant, ensuring it is far enough into the gap so as not to interfere with the windows function. Prepare the external surface of the window frame before sealing. Any internal making good and sealing should now be done. As Plaster and cement can damage metal fittings and locks it should be wiped off immediately. Any drainage channels found to be blocked should be cleared. Following this installation the UPVC plastic window frames may be cleaned using warm water containing a mild household detergent. Stubborn marks may be removed using very fine water based creams (such as cif) but it may be necessary to rebuff with a lambs wool mop and a purpose upvc polish to achieve a glossy finish.

MF Hire - stock a wide range of tools to assist in the installation of new windows or doors, as well as equipment to help repair and undertake all home improvement projects. Whether you are changing your windows from wooden to upvc style or perhaps fitting new laminate flooring, they can help, with equipment and tools available at affordable prices.

METAL CUTTING

METAL CUTTING AND FABRICATION:

When cutting metal it is important to use the correct tool to ensure safety standards are upheld and the fabrication being undertaken is accurate.

A popular tool to use is the angle grinder; an angle grinder (available in several sizes and power outputs) can remove metal quickly and save hours of otherwise labourious time.

In the UK several leading brands of grinders are available including top power tool names such as Bosch, Dewalt, Hitachi, Makita, and Ryobi.

Hitachi Angle Grinders in particular are suited for metal working due to their strong construction, high power motors, and reliability when used in this environment.

The most popular sizes of hitachi angle grinders purchased are the 4 1/2" and 9" models, typically the G12SR and G23 versions. Both grinders are user friendly, efficient in power output and are available to buy at competitive prices.

Hitachi angle grinders are not normally sold in DIY stores as they are more suited to professional tradesmen, builders, and metal workers. To purchase a Hitachi G12 or G23 angle grinder the route that should be taken is to visit a specialist tool shop catering for these type of customers.

One such outlet is a company in Nottingham that sells alltools in the Hitachi range, and at discount prices is MF Hire. Their tool shop is located at Colwick Road, on the outskirts of Nottingham city centre.

FLOOR VARNISHING

FLOOR VARNISHING & PROTECTION:

If you are renovating wooden floors or the laminate flooring in your home, consideration should be given to the final result you are aiming to achieve.

Prior to undertaking the restoration a thorough examination should be done to establish the work required and tasks needed (as well as costs) to restore the floor to it's former glory.

Wood Treatment:

Any wood with signs of insect damage should be treated with a propriety chemical treatment to eradicate the pests and prevent the condition returning. The same applies for dry & wet rot. Where possible treat all timber and surrounding masonry with either a DIY application of the chosen chemicals or by using the service of a local company specialising in this field of wood treatment.

Where the wood is damaged beyond repair, any affected timber should be cut out and replaced, the wood being cut to size and sanded where needed to the correct dimensions to fit.

Special care needs to be taken when the timber concerned is the actual flooring in a room. The area of flooring being repaired needs to be totally level with all the floor boards surrounding this area to ensure the finish is perfect, and any carpets fitted lay flat without ridges or bumps.

The best way to achieve this is through the use of a professional machine designed for this job.

Floor Varnish:

Sadolin produce a hard wearing varnish suitable for all interior flooring. This leading manufacturer utilises Teflon in it's varnish to provide excellent protection against wear.

Sadolin Polyurethane Varnish is leaves an extremely tough and hard wearing finish. Has an excellent flow rate which reduces the possibility of any brush marks beng left. When used on bare timber this varnish also reduces the risk of the varnish yellowing due to it's formula make up.

An additional benefit in using Sadolin Floor Varnish is the low odour given off when applying this product.

Varnish Properties:

Composition: Polyurethane resin, can be dispersed in water, with Teflon® surface protector
technology in manufacture.

Coating System:

Generally requires three coats alone on most interior timber floors. If the desired shade is
achieved with one or two coats the system should be completed with
colourless Polyurethane Floor Varnish.

Finishing:

Colours - Satin. Colourless finish is available in Gloss and Satin.
As with all translucent coatings, the final colour and overall sheen are
dependent on a number of factors, including the timber species,
colour and cut, and the presence of any existing coating.
N.B. The final shade is dependent on the number and thickness of the
coats applied. It should be remembered that the colour guides in the
sadolin brochure are produced using three full coats of the appropriate shade.
A trial application is strongly recommended prior to the
commencement of work.

Application Rate:

12-15m2 per litre.

(This figure is intended as a guide) The actual coverage of the floor varnish will depend on a
number of factors, including timber species, the surface condition, moisture
content, the method of application and conditions during application.

Drying Time Needed: (@20ºC) Touch dry time: 1-2 hours.
Recoatable : 2-4 hours.

Note: Drying times are dependent upon absorption of substrate and
drying conditions. The minimum recommended application temperature is
8oC. At low temperatures and/or conditions of high relative humidity,
or in poorly ventilated areas, the drying times of the varnish will be extended
.

AIR CON INSTALLATION AND REPAIRS

AIR CONDITIONING INSTALLATION:

As the weather climate changes in the UK a popular installation in retail outlets, offices, and commercial buildings is the fitment of air conditioning units. To operate effectively the installation and maintenance should be trusted to a professional company who specialise in this field.

The areas of installation of the equipment are amongst the most demanding in terms of design, project management, and technical skills. A professional air con company should be looked on as a site or building development partner.

As well as the installation team it is normal for the property developer, or end user to use the services of a consulting engineer, surveyor, inspector, and local tool hire company to assist in the work undertaken.

Most companies involved in air conditioning installation and the associated ductwork needed employ trained staff who are multi skilled. This way the company can ensure the job gets done as quickly as possible and on budget. Typically the fitters will use vehicles which are racked out with tools and equipment, as well as all fittings, to ensure any eventualities are overcome.

The ducting installation is made easier with the hire of a genie lift; this piece of equipment is an easy to use manually operated lift / hoist which allows the operator to move the ducting into position safetly and quickly prior to permanent fixture. Once the ducting is correctly positioned and attached, the genie superlift can be removed and folded down for easy transportation.

WHEELIE BIN CLEANING NOTTINGHAM

WHEELIE BIN CLEANING::

Effective cleaning of your wheelie bin can be accomplished with the use of a high pressure power washing machine. Being made of modern plastics the cleaning of your wheelie bin can be undertaken easily and quickly with the right tool.

A cold water pressure washer uses a mains water supply which is converted to a high pressure by the machines internal water pump. Water is powered out of the machines nozzle at a high rate and PSI to blast dirt and debris from the bin.

In stubborn cases a commercial grade of washer is required to fully sanitise the bin. This type of cleaner will most likely be a hot water cleaner which heats the water supply first to a very high temerature, effectively cleaning the bin inside and out and sanitising it at the same time.

Due to their low price cold water pressure washers are within reach of most homeowners to purchase, and are ideal for occasional usage and cleaning tasks. For regular use however these units are not powerful enough and the decision has to be made to either use a wheelie bin cleaning company to undertake contract cleaning of the bin, or alternatively hire a pressure washer from time to time from a local hire company.

Hiring a pressure washer has several advantages:

* No repair or regular maintenance fees

* Commercial grade equipment - easier to use and more effective than DIY products

* Low outlay - especially if rented at weekends

* Peace of mind - hire equipment should be well maintained and safety tested

Decision To Use A Wheelie Bin Cleaning Company:

If you choose to use a local company specialising in bin cleaning in Nottingham several operate throughout Nottingham, Newark, Ilkeston & Derby.

These can be found using the local yellow pages or through the use of a search engine on the internet. Most offer a speedy response and will most lkely cater for households near or in your area.

MOTORCYCLE CLEANING

MOTORCYCLE CLEANING:

Exposed to the elements one of the most difficult tasks to undertake is the regular cleaning of motorcycles.

With so many mechanical components exposed regular cleaning is neccessary to prevent dirt build up and spoiling of the vehicles appearance and finish.

After winter riding one of the main tasks to take on is a thorough clean of the bike and removal of any traces of road salt that may have been attracted to it.

For road bikes fitted without a rear hugger the area around the shock absorber should be thoroughly cleaned with either a powerful hosepipe or ideally a heavy duty pressure washer (used on it's lowest setting).

This should be followed by careful cleaning of the engine, the motorcycles frame, and front suspension / fork area. Careful attention should be made when cleaning around the bikes electrical items including the wiring loom, switchgear, lights, and all other electrical fittings.

For stubborn debris a purpose valeting brush should be used which removes the dirt but without scratching the motorbikes paintwork.

The next stage should be ensuring the bike is fully dry before treatment of the paintwork and plastics, as well as general lubrication of all related items. As well as leaving the bike to dry naturally the process can be speeded up with the use of a compressor and airline, or a tip for the home DIY'er is to use a household hair dryer.

When all traces of water have been removed and you are sure the vehicle is completely dry, the paintwork and plastics (fairing, chain guard, hugger, screen etc) should have a quality polish applied and be buffed to a protective finish. Several different types of specialist bike cleaners are available such as; autoglym, muc off, meguiars to name a few.

Lubrication: If fitted the motorbike should be greased and lubricated where needed according to the owners manual. Attention should be given to thorough greasing of the chain especially if a power washer was used to clean it. Other items include greasing of the swinging arm bushes (grease nipples may be present), linkages, footpeg points, and stand pivots. Care should be taken to make sure grease and oil is kept away from the bikes tyres, as well as all operator controls.

SPILLAGE CLEAN UP

SPILLAGE CLEAN UP::

If your home or property suffers a flood or water leakage prompt attention is required to prevent costly damage to it's fixtures and decorations.

The first course of action needs to be the prevention of any further damage by the turning off of the water supply. In most homes this can be located in an area normally in the kitchen, close to the sink basin. In commercial property this could vary but is generally situated close to the incoming water supply pipes to the building.

After shutting off the water supply the next step is removal of the water to allow work to be undertaken to repair and redecorate the effected area.

Tradition hand clean up methods can be used such as the traditional "mop & bucket", but to speed the job up an electric wet and dry vacuum cleaner or carpet cleaning machine could be used.

A wet & dry vacuum cleaner will suck up water as well as dry materials allowing you to work at a faster pace to tackle the spillage. If carpet soiling has taken place the best method of cleaning the carpets is with a professional carpet cleaning machine.

Both these two pieces of equipment are out of reach of the homeowner / DIY'er, but are available for hire at a reasonable cost from one of the leading tool hire companies. When hired due to these machines being electric it is normal for a "circuit breaker" to be offered at the time of collection. A "circuit breaker" offers peace of mind with extra levels of safety being provided when electrical equipment is used, especially in areas where flooding or water damage has occured.

Another piece of equipment to consider following a flood is the use of a water power washer. Commonly known as a pressure washer this item forces water out at a very high pressure to clean solid objects (walls/concrete floors) with ease.

Athough available at very low cost prices for DIY models, professional power washers are designed for regular use by professional tradesmen and so generally sell for a far higher price. Again this is the type of tool which can be more cost effective to hire, especially from a tool hire company that specialises in cleaning equipment rental.
