METAL CUTTING

METAL CUTTING AND FABRICATION:

When cutting metal it is important to use the correct tool to ensure safety standards are upheld and the fabrication being undertaken is accurate.

A popular tool to use is the angle grinder; an angle grinder (available in several sizes and power outputs) can remove metal quickly and save hours of otherwise labourious time.

In the UK several leading brands of grinders are available including top power tool names such as Bosch, Dewalt, Hitachi, Makita, and Ryobi.

Hitachi Angle Grinders in particular are suited for metal working due to their strong construction, high power motors, and reliability when used in this environment.

The most popular sizes of hitachi angle grinders purchased are the 4 1/2" and 9" models, typically the G12SR and G23 versions. Both grinders are user friendly, efficient in power output and are available to buy at competitive prices.

Hitachi angle grinders are not normally sold in DIY stores as they are more suited to professional tradesmen, builders, and metal workers. To purchase a Hitachi G12 or G23 angle grinder the route that should be taken is to visit a specialist tool shop catering for these type of customers.

One such outlet is a company in Nottingham that sells alltools in the Hitachi range, and at discount prices is MF Hire. Their tool shop is located at Colwick Road, on the outskirts of Nottingham city centre.

FLOOR VARNISHING

FLOOR VARNISHING & PROTECTION:

If you are renovating wooden floors or the laminate flooring in your home, consideration should be given to the final result you are aiming to achieve.

Prior to undertaking the restoration a thorough examination should be done to establish the work required and tasks needed (as well as costs) to restore the floor to it's former glory.

Wood Treatment:

Any wood with signs of insect damage should be treated with a propriety chemical treatment to eradicate the pests and prevent the condition returning. The same applies for dry & wet rot. Where possible treat all timber and surrounding masonry with either a DIY application of the chosen chemicals or by using the service of a local company specialising in this field of wood treatment.

Where the wood is damaged beyond repair, any affected timber should be cut out and replaced, the wood being cut to size and sanded where needed to the correct dimensions to fit.

Special care needs to be taken when the timber concerned is the actual flooring in a room. The area of flooring being repaired needs to be totally level with all the floor boards surrounding this area to ensure the finish is perfect, and any carpets fitted lay flat without ridges or bumps.

The best way to achieve this is through the use of a professional machine designed for this job.

Floor Varnish:

Sadolin produce a hard wearing varnish suitable for all interior flooring. This leading manufacturer utilises Teflon in it's varnish to provide excellent protection against wear.

Sadolin Polyurethane Varnish is leaves an extremely tough and hard wearing finish. Has an excellent flow rate which reduces the possibility of any brush marks beng left. When used on bare timber this varnish also reduces the risk of the varnish yellowing due to it's formula make up.

An additional benefit in using Sadolin Floor Varnish is the low odour given off when applying this product.

Varnish Properties:

Composition: Polyurethane resin, can be dispersed in water, with Teflon® surface protector
technology in manufacture.

Coating System:

Generally requires three coats alone on most interior timber floors. If the desired shade is
achieved with one or two coats the system should be completed with
colourless Polyurethane Floor Varnish.

Finishing:

Colours - Satin. Colourless finish is available in Gloss and Satin.
As with all translucent coatings, the final colour and overall sheen are
dependent on a number of factors, including the timber species,
colour and cut, and the presence of any existing coating.
N.B. The final shade is dependent on the number and thickness of the
coats applied. It should be remembered that the colour guides in the
sadolin brochure are produced using three full coats of the appropriate shade.
A trial application is strongly recommended prior to the
commencement of work.

Application Rate:

12-15m2 per litre.

(This figure is intended as a guide) The actual coverage of the floor varnish will depend on a
number of factors, including timber species, the surface condition, moisture
content, the method of application and conditions during application.

Drying Time Needed: (@20ÂșC) Touch dry time: 1-2 hours.
Recoatable : 2-4 hours.

Note: Drying times are dependent upon absorption of substrate and
drying conditions. The minimum recommended application temperature is
8oC. At low temperatures and/or conditions of high relative humidity,
or in poorly ventilated areas, the drying times of the varnish will be extended
.
