What is a vibrating concrete poker?

A vibrating poker is an item of construction equipment that is used to help remove pockets of trapped air from concrete that has been freshly laid. 

It consists of a strong weight that vibrates in an enclosed flexible drive shaft that is driven commonly by a small compact sized petrol engine. (You can also source models that are driven by electric)

The vibrating action of the head unit on the poker causes the concrete to vibrate when the unit is inserted, this then causes the concrete mix to become slightly more fluid. This action allows air that has been trapped (during the mixing and pouring stage) to escape by way of bubbles that form and then rise upwards to the surface. 

Using a Poker Vibrator

A concrete poker should be used in a vertical action, the head being inserted into freshly laid concrete to a depth no more than one and a half times the head length. 

When carrying out this job it means the depth of the concrete should normally be no deeper than around 300 to 500mm (measured vertically). For deeper foundations and pours the concrete should be built-up in a section of layers. 

The head of the tool should not be allowed to rest against the bottom of the concrete mix or the formwork / shuttering. Using the pokers head above the base will allow free movement giving effective vibration and a better overall result in removing any air that is trapped.  

Ideally the head of the unit should be left in the concrete for a few seconds only, but due to the different factors involved (mix of the concrete, depth of the pour, distance from formwork etc) it is hard to be specific about the exact length of time the vibrating poker should be used for. The operator of this item of construction equipment should see an area of "involvement" (a circle) where the poker is inserted, bubbles should rise and the surface level may drop too. When the air bubbles stop rising the compaction should be completed.
