What is a vibrating concrete poker?

A vibrating poker is an item of construction equipment that is used to help remove pockets of trapped air from concrete that has been freshly laid.

Ideally the head of the unit should be left in the concrete for a few seconds only, but due to the different factors involved (mix of the concrete, depth of the pour, distance from formwork etc) it is hard to be specific about the exact length of time the vibrating poker should be used for. The operator of this item of construction equipment should see an area of "involvement" (a circle) where the poker is inserted, bubbles should rise and the surface level may drop too. When the air bubbles stop rising the compaction should be completed.
